Mexican White Dipping Sauce usually accompanies the salsa and chips you are served at local Mexican restaurants as an alternative dipping sauce; apparently, not everyone likes salsa. Truth be known, I often mix the two while waiting for my food to arrive. To be honest, this sauce is not truly Mexican, but an American creation served at Mexican restaurants. What’s even more curious is that it’s not available everywhere, just in certain regions.
Sometimes referred to as salsa blanca, or white sauce, its sweetness is obtained from Miracle Whip. Who knew? Based upon some investigating, its origin seems to be in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Unknown to many parts of our country, I’ll take it as a regional item. I live in neighboring Maryland and it’s always been served with their warm chip appetizer along with their fresh salsa. My youngest son who lives in Colorado says it’s nowhere to be found there. Many recipes I found used a 30 ounce jar of Miracle Whip. I hardly needed that much white sauce, so I sized it down a bit for this post. You can adjust it to your need if entertaining a larger crowd beyond just family.
This sauce is best when made a day ahead of time which allows the magical blending of all of those flavors together to occur. If you don’t have that time to spare, make it early in the morning for an early evening appetizer. Just whisk and chill; the longer the better to allow the flavors to be absorbed. At most, this took like 5 minutes to put together. Certainly you have that little bit of time to put this together, don’t you?
If you look closely, you can see the little specks of flavor dispersed throughout the sauce. I guarantee this is addicting!
After about a day of chill time, it’s ready to serve. Give it a little stir, thin it with a little more milk, if desired. In some Mexican restaurants, this is served as a house dressing. I like to serve this Mexican White Dipping Sauce alongside my Fresh Salsa. Spoon a little of both on your plate and scoop a little bit of each on your chip. Yum! You could even try it as a sandwich spread or a topping for tacos. Be creative!
